Jeremy Vine always used to say that he was so fortunate to be a political correspondent in the mid-nineties, saying it was the best ever time to be reporting on politics because the government was in complete chaos with ridiculous scandals and cock-ups happening every five minutes and the administration seemingly falling apart in front of your eyes. We know, not much different to these days, though it possibly says more about the standard of some of today’s politicians that we look back fondly now at people for at least being vaguely competent and polite, even though people didn’t stop slagging them off at the time. For all that, this should be an entertaining and eye-opening look at the dying days of the Major era, in the company of Ken Clarke, Gillian Shepherd and other big beasts who are now long enough out of politics to be totally candid.
