“What happened to us? What happens when the world deserts you?” Netflix has unveiled the first teaser trailer for Spanish director J.A. Bayona’s latest film titled Society of the Snow, returning to his Spanish-language roots for a thriller set in the mountains of Chile. It’s premiering as the final film at the 2023 Venice Film Festival next month. Based on a true story. In 1972, Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, which had been flying a rugby team to Chile, crashed in the heart of the Andes mountains. Only 29 of the 45 passengers survived the accident. Trapped in one of the most hostile and inaccessible environments on the planet, they have to resort to extreme measures to stay alive. A story of endurance and perseverance in one of the world’s toughest environments to survive in. Always so crazy. The film’s complete ensemble cast includes Enzo Vogrincic, Agustín Pardella, Matías Recalt, Esteban Bigliardi, Rafael Federman, Fernando Contigiani García, Diego Vegezzi, Esteban Kukuriczka, Francisco Romero, Valentino Alonso, Tomás Wolf, Agustín Della Corte, Felipe Otaño, Andy Pruss, Blas Polidori, Felipe Ramusio, & Simón Hempe. With music composed by Michael Giacchino. This is looking like it might be really good.

Society of the Snow, also known as La Sociedad de la Nieve in Spanish, is directed by acclaimed Spanish producer / filmmaker J.A. Bayona, director of the films The Orphanage, The Impossible, A Monster Calls, and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, along with TV work on “Penny Dreadful” and “Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power”, plus many shorts and music videos previously. The screenplay is written by J.A. Bayona, Bernat Vilaplana, Jaime Marques, Nicolás Casariego. Based on the Book “The Society of the Snow” written by Pablo Vierci. It’s produced by Belén Atienza, Sandra Hermida, and J.A. Bayona. This is premiering at the 2023 Venice Film Festival as the Closing Night film. Netflix will then release Bayona’s Society of the Snow streaming on Netflix worldwide sometime in late 2023 – stay tuned. First impression? How does that look?
